Equality Arlington Celebrates Adoption of the Marriage Equality Constitutional Amendment

Equality Arlington, an LGBTQ+ advocacy nonprofit, is celebrating Virginia voters’ decision to enshrine Marriage Equality in the Virginia Constitution! Twenty years after Virginia’s ban on same-sex marriage was adopted, 57% of Virginia voters and 85% of Arlington voters chose to reverse the ban and support same-sex and interracial marriages. On January 1, 2027, Virginia will become the first state in the South to remove a same-sex marriage ban from its constitution.

“Voters in Arlington and across Virginia sent a clear message last night that Virginia is for ALL lovers. The Virginia constitution will finally recognize that families come in many forms and that the government has no business policing the love between consenting adults,” said Kellen MacBeth, President of Equality Arlington.

Equality Arlington joined the state-wide Virginians for Marriage Equality coalition earlier this year and was proud to support the campaign for the Marriage Equality constitutional amendment.
