Equality Arlington opposes the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) proposed rule, “Nondiscrimination on the Basis of Disability in Programs or Activities Receiving Federal Financial Assistance.” We urge HHS to maintain its commitment to a robust disability civil rights framework that continues to recognize disabilities based on a gender dysphoria diagnosis and request that HHS leave the final rule issued in 2024 in place.

Equality Arlington Strongly Opposes the Virginia Board of Health’s Anti-Transgender Proposed Regulation
Equality Arlington opposes the Virginia Board of Health’s proposed regulation to prevent transgender women from participating in women’s sports throughout Virginia and from using women’s changing rooms or bathrooms. The proposed regulatory action is in direct violation of the Virginia Human Rights Act which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and would cause significant harm to transgender women. We urge the Board of Health to halt their proposed regulatory action.

Equality Arlington urges Arlington County to protect access to HIV and STI public health services by 1) ensuring that HIV treatment and prevention services remain affordable and accessible in Arlington and 2) ensuring that the Public Health Division’s application and eligibility processes are simple, fair, and do not result in denials of care due to red tape.
Equality Arlington Condemns Lt. Governor Earle-Sears’ Anti-LGBTQ+ Remarks During Gubernatorial Debate
Equality Arlington condemns Lt. Governor Winsome Earle-Sears’ anti-LGBTQ+ remarks during the gubernatorial debate last night. Earle-Sears said firing workers for being gay and denying a marriage license to a same-sex couple do not constitute discrimination—despite both being illegal under Virginia law. We are also appalled by her continued attacks on the very existence of transgender individuals in our commonwealth. We call on the Lt. Governor, and all candidates running for state-wide office, to denounce discrimination, as defined by Virginia law, against all people.

Equality Arlington sent the five candidates running for County Board in the November 2025 General Election a questionnaire with questions about issues impacting the LGBTQ+ community in Arlington, Virginia. Equality Arlington calls on the Arlington School Board and Arlington Public Schools administration to stand up for the rights of LGBTQIA+ students and take every legal and other appropriate action to oppose and resist the U.S. Department of Education, Virginia High School League, and Virginia Department of Education whose recent actions reveal their intent to harm and discriminate against vulnerable transgender and nonbinary students.

Equality Arlington Applauds County Board’s Adoption of LGBTQIA+ Resolution
Equality Arlington, an LGBTQ+ advocacy nonprofit, applauds the Arlington County Board for adopting a “Resolution affirming Arlington County’s support of WorldPride 2025 and the LGBTQIA+ Community” on May 13, 2025. Building on the 2019 Equity Resolution, the LGBTQIA+ resolution articulates specific actions for the County Manager and government to take to protect and celebrate LGBTQ+ residents. The LGBTQIA+ resolution makes it clear that, no matter what happens in Washington, Arlington will not discriminate against LGBTQ+ residents and their families, and the county recognizes the immense contribution our community makes to the economic and social wellbeing of Arlington.

At a time when the federal government has forsaken its commitment to executing the law and safeguarding the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, Arlington County must step up as a final line of defense for LGBTQ+ residents and workers.
Equality Arlington Urges Arlington Public Schools to Continue Supporting LGBTQ+ Students
In light of reports that the Trump administration’s U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights has opened an investigation into Arlington Public Schools (APS) for upholding the dignity of transgender students, Equality Arlington would like to thank the Arlington School Board and APS administration for their steadfast support for LGBTQ+ students, especially transgender and nonbinary students, and urge them to stand firm. The law is clear—the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has already ruled that Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 protects transgender students’ rights in schools (Grimm v. Gloucester County School Board) and their ability to play on sports teams that align with their gender identity (BPJ v. West Virginia Board of Education).

Equality Arlington condemns passage by the U.S. House of Representatives on January 14th of H.R. 28, a trans athlete ban. We urge Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to work with their Senate colleagues to ensure its defeat. This bill is an unscientific attempt to dehumanize young transgender Americans and establish a precedent for systematically denying the legitimacy of transgender people’s existence.
Equality Arlington Statement on the Indecent Exposure Incident at Washington-Liberty High School Locker Room
Equality Arlington echoes the shock, grief, and outrage of Arlington residents that a serial sex offender was able to access the Washington-Liberty pool in violation of the law and Arlington Public School policy and was, as a result, able to commit acts of indecency in the women’s locker room. With Donald Trump projected to win the White House and enter his term with control of the U.S. Senate, many of us in the LGBTQIA+ community and our allies, have questions about what this means for our safety and our future. Equality Arlington would like to assure our Arlington community that we intend to continue fighting for our well-being in every aspect of our lives. We look forward to working with the county and our community to continue making Arlington a place where everyone can thrive no matter who they love, how they love, or how they present themselves.
